203. Overwhelm Rehab: How to Find Confidence & Clarity in Less Than an Hour
Today, I want to share with you a tangible process that has helped many overwhelmed entrepreneurs, including myself, to regain confidence, clarity, and profitable productivity in less than an hour.
For many years, I lived in a state of constant overwhelm. It was a place of comfort for me, a familiar territory where I felt I belonged. But I soon realized that living in overwhelm was not necessary, and it certainly didn’t have to lead to doubt or a constant struggle to achieve goals.
The Power of One Hour
I want to introduce you to a concept that has been a game-changer for me and my clients – blocking one hour in your schedule specifically for overcoming overwhelm. This is not just about finding time, but about making time for this exercise. It’s about not packing your schedule so tightly that you can’t prioritize your own well-being.
Depending on your personal needs and the season you’re in, this process can be done monthly, weekly, quarterly, or as needed. During this dedicated hour, I advise you to shut off all notifications and remove distractions like phones and computers. All you need is a blank notebook and a whiteboard.
Creating a Space for Clarity
Find a quiet and uninterrupted space to do this exercise. It might mean waking up early or finding time outside of your usual routine. This is a conscious choice to be a visionary leader and to temporarily compartmentalize your life for one hour. It’s about choosing to bring a positive mindset and energy into this blocked period of time.
Mapping Out Your Schedule
Take your calendar and write out everything for the next two weeks, including weekends. The goal is to color code the schedule based on work-related and personal/family commitments. This will help you stay focused and not let overwhelm take over.
Identifying the Overwhelm
Next, take a piece of paper and divide it into two columns: personal/family and business. Brain dump all the things causing overwhelm, such as tasks, to-do lists, and projects. By doing this, you can see if your calendar aligns with your mental load and identify any gaps or discrepancies.
Operating in Reality
Overwhelm is often a result of not having a plan of attack or making strategic decisions. I urge you to operate in reality and make more strategic choices rather than emotional ones. By getting everything out of your head and onto paper, you can start to de-stress and create a clear path forward.
Planning for Growth
In addition to this process, I’m hosting a free masterclass to help you strategically plan your most profitable year. The masterclass covers reviewing the previous year, planning for growth, and implementing cash flow boosting actions. My director of operations will also be present to turn your plans into actionable projects and timelines.
Identify tasks that can be stripped away, delegated, or postponed in order to buy back time. This includes attending unnecessary meetings, social events, or appointments that can be rescheduled. Prioritize tasks that contribute to the health of the business, oneself, or one’s family in the current season.
Expanding Mental Capacity
I want to discuss the importance of expanding mental capacity. It may feel like you’re at maximum capacity, but I assure you, this is not true. Just like a parent’s love for multiple children, your capacity to handle more can expand naturally.
Maybe it is a busy season, embrace it!
Instead of feeling like victims of circumstance, let’s embrace these busy times as opportunities for growth and success. Our circumstances do not have to dictate how we feel. We have the power to choose how we respond to our circumstances.
Overwhelm and stress often stem from seven common areas: drama, lack of foresight and planning, shiny object syndrome, lack of vision, misaligned priorities, lack of awareness, and lack of resources and support infrastructure. These are all leadership problems that can be addressed by focusing on personal and business growth, and developing strong leadership skills.
