I used to crave that rush until I realized some of the goals I was setting weren’t just exhausting me – they were rewriting the rules of my life and not in a good way.

Here’s the truth: Most entrepreneurs don’t fail because they don’t work hard enough, they fail because they never stop to ask: What are my goals costing me?

Last year, I took on a $600,000 client contract, it was the kind of opportunity I used to dream about – high-level, high-impact and financially rewarding.

But within weeks, I could feel it unraveling. I felt my chest tighten, I was constantly tense. I’d sit at the dinner table physically present, but my mind was already in tomorrow’s meetings so my family got my body, not my heart.

I was operating under rules I never meant to agree to – rules that kicked in the second I said yes to that goal.

That’s when it hit me:

Every goal installs a system, every system demands behaviors, and those repeated behaviors quietly become your life.

This is why aligned business goals matter more than impressive ones. Because the wrong goal – no matter how shiny – can choke out the very peace and purpose you’re working so hard to protect.

3 Questions to Audit Your Goals Before You Commit

Before you charge into the next big thing, take a breath.

This is the part most founders skip – not because they’re careless, but because they’re wired to go. The difference between a goal that elevates you and one that drains you comes down to what you’re willing to pause and discern.

So before you commit to your goals as an entrepreneur, ask:

  1. What rules would you have to live under for this goal to work?
    What’s the pace, the pressure, the presence it demands? Will this build a life you want to live or one you’ll quietly resent?
  2. Who pays the price for those rules?
    Is it you? Your health? Your marriage? Your faith? Your peace? Every goal has a cost, someone always pays.
  3. Would you still want this goal if these rules were non-negotiable?
    If nothing could change – if this was the rhythm required – would it still be worth

This is what values-driven leadership looks like in practice. It’s the shift from chasing goals to choosing alignment and building what actually matters.

Visionary Goals vs. Operator Goals

This is where the real shift happens.

  • Operator goals ask: “Can I hit this number?”
  • Visionary goals ask: “Who do I become if I hit it?”

The former gets you a win, the latter transforms your life.
