Episode 199: The Rules of Good Mentorship (Part 2)

November 27, 2023

The Significance of Mentorship

Over the past 12 years, mentorship has played a pivotal role in my personal and business development. I’ve learned that finding a mentor who aligns with your values and has experienced similar challenges in their own life can be a game-changer. This episode is part 2 of our “The Rules of Good Mentorship” mini series. Make sure to check out part 1 if you have not already.

Nurturing the Mentor-Mentee Relationship

Once you find the right mentor, it’s crucial to take responsibility for the relationship and show gratitude. I often share the concept of “always pay for lunch,” which symbolizes the willingness to invest in the mentorship and show appreciation. Whether it’s a paid opportunity or not, I encourage you to focus on leveraging the relationship rather than constantly analyzing the investment.

Flexibility is another key aspect of a successful mentorship. I’ve learned from my own experience that being willing to accommodate your mentor’s schedule and showing up when it’s convenient for them can make a significant difference.

Adding Value to Your Mentor’s Life

As a mentee, it’s important to look for opportunities to add value to your mentor’s life. This doesn’t mean offering unsolicited advice or trying to appear knowledgeable, but rather finding ways to serve and support the mentor in a meaningful way.

The Art of Asking Great Questions

In a mentorship, asking great questions is crucial. Rather than using your mentor as a Google search engine, use your time with them to ask deep and insightful questions that will provide wisdom and insight. The success of your business is directly correlated to the quality of questions you ask as a leader.

Going Beyond Business Insights

While it’s important to ask questions about professional growth, career development, industry insights, and strategies for growth, don’t forget to delve into personal development. Ask your mentors about mindset, leadership, and how they approach challenges. By understanding how your mentors think, you can gain valuable insights and learn to think differently yourself.

While it’s beneficial to seek advice on expanding your professional network, don’t expect your mentor to create that network for you. Instead, focus on building and nurturing relationships yourself.

Best Practices and Mistakes to Avoid

When seeking mentorship, it’s important to be open to feedback and respect the mentor’s time. Avoid lack of preparation and not applying the advice given by the mentor. Also, be wary of becoming overly dependent on the mentor and ignoring feedback.

Mentorship is for Everyone

A strong mentorship relationship goes beyond just metrics and numbers. Focus on personal growth, character development, and learning how to make decisions independently.

Remember, mentorship is for everyone. Do your due diligence when seeking a mentor. I also offer my own mastermind and one-on-one opportunities for mentorship.

The value of mentorship and the importance of leveraging the relationship to drive personal and professional growth cannot be overstated. Express gratitude to your mentors and remember to leave reviews for the podcast.
