Episode 53: Raising Luminaries: Vision Casting with Your Kids

January 6, 2022

WE SET OUR VISION AND GOALS FOR THIS YEAR AS ADULTS, AS ENTREPRENEURS.

BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR KIDS?

To close out last year we did an episode (Episode 51) around this idea of helping our kids to set goals of their own. But, today we want to give those goals meaning and breathe life into a vision that will really speak to our children.

Goals are just the stepping stones to something greater. They’re not the end-all be-all. So, let’s talk through how to help our kids rise above a New Year’s resolution and step into casting an actual vision for where they feel called to go.

Let’s raise them up right!

IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVER:

[4:15] The Vision

The first step in helping our kids cast a vision is really helping them understand what we mean by it.

This is where we set the expectations or the possibility for our lives. Without that vision, we wake up five years from now feeling disconnected from our original mission or a sense of purpose. This way we are teaching our children to be thought leaders, to be visionaries, to cast a vision that is bravely out into the future and requires work, evolution, change and creativity to get to where they want to go.

[4:59] Future Forecasting

Now, before we set something in stone, we need to evoke some of the pieces of our kid’s future that they want to weave into this.

This comes down to the granular; teaching our kids that they can have this beautiful grandiose vision, something that they are willing to fight for because it means something to them. But they also need to understand that if it’s going to happen, it’s going to be built in the granular of the day-to-day.

[6:14] The Perfect Day

The first thing we need to do is walk through a process of helping them craft their ideal day.

Because sometimes kids set their goals, without knowing really what is required to achieve them. This ends either with them dedicating every day to that craft but it wasn’t how they really wanted to live, or they didn’t dedicate it and they don’t achieve the thing. Both options suck. So, let’s help them drill down into the granular.

Some questions to help your kid craft this ideal day are:

  • What does my day look like?
  • What do I do each day?
  • How do I feel each day?
  • What is making me feel otherwise right now?
  • What habits do I need to change?
  • What habits need to come into my life?

[8:40] Who Do I Serve

A big piece of this process is understanding your child’s calling.

I always like to weave into the conversation “Who do I serve?”  We live in a “me” culture. We live in a selfie culture or a self care culture where everything comes back to self. But I always want my kids looking outward and saying: “How can what I’m doing and what I’m pursuing be in honor of serving others at the same time?”

So, what’s on your child’s heart?

[9:58] How Do I Spend my Free Time

Kids have to become more self aware of how they spend their free time.

How often do they just plug into a screen and it just eats away at that free time? Time that could be used for cultivating something new or fine tuning or mastering a skill or doing something that brings them passion in life.

They have to become conscious of how they spend their free time and to have an understanding of when they start to cast this vision, some of that free time might need to go towards pursuing that vision.

[11:17] Health Routine

I also like to incorporate some things for our kids’ health routine.

What do you do in your day to ensure that you’re staying healthy?

I’m not talking about putting you know my six-year-old through a HIIT workout, but we ask them things like: “Are you conscious of moving your body every day? Are you fueling it with the right things? Are you hydrating?”

It doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be simple, but make them conscious of it.

[11:58] True North

One thing that will help them with all of this is doing the True North exercise. It’s a free workbook that we put together for you and your whole family (including your kids) to help them have the foundation to build this vision upon.

If they try to do something like this without the strong foundation of their values and their priorities and what makes them come alive, it’s going to just be a Pinterest board of random things they think are cool instead of something that really has meaning. Those values can be developed through this True North exercise. It’s going to give them that North Star to follow as that becomes their vision.

So, head on over to luminaryleadershipco.com/truenorth and download our free guide.

[12:49] Breathe Life Into the Vision

Finally, help them breathe life into their vision.

Don’t let this just turn into goals. Let this vision roll far beyond the walls of this upcoming year. This can be something that they do with time, this can be something that they pursue and give them the permission to pivot, change and grow as they change and grow.

Help them learn to keep their head up enough to always keep their eyes on this vision so when they lean into that bad habit that’s not going to help them in pursuit of it or they’re starting to spend time with people who are not in alignment with their values, they can come back to that vision. They can come back to that True North.

Don’t do this for them. Don’t cast a vision for them. You’re there as bumper lanes not as the creator; they are the creator.

I’m so curious to see how this process goes, and I invite you to do the True North exercise at  https://luminaryleadershipco.com/truenorth/. Once you’re done, send me a screenshot, I’d love to see what values you and your children come up with!
