AT LUMINARY LEADERSHIP, OUR FOCUS IS VERY HEAVY ON HELPING YOU RAISE LEADERS as you build your empire and giving you the tools and the resources to do it. The other day, while I was having a meeting with my creative director Caitlyn, we both had a very stark realization that the school system and society are not helping any of us do that. It’s not helping us raise leaders. It’s not helping us build confidence in our kids.
Caitlyn showed me a picture of her daughter’s progress report from grade school and my jaw dropped. It blew me away. I have to share it with you today because it’s going to make your jaw drop too when you really think about what the schools are doing to our kids (disclaimer: Not every school, but I’m talking in general)
Today we are highlighting something that sometimes flies under the radar, but it is stripping our kids of possibility, creativity and confidence and it needs to be addressed.
Let’s raise them up right!
IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVER:

[4:45] The “Benchmark” Report
So, the other day I was sitting down with my creative director, Caitlyn, for another brainstorming session and at one point she mentions her daughter’s fifth-grade “benchmark” report. She showed me the picture of this benchmark report and it was an actual graph with different categories that were highlighted. There was a college pathway, which was at the top of the graph; the second one was “low risk”; the third one was “some risk” and the fourth was ”high risk”.
This is the exact way of thinking that the system creates for parents and children.
[8:36] Looking At The Test Scores Only
How are they assessing this?
There are so many elements to our kids that are more critical than the test scores that they’re receiving.
Do they have emotional intelligence? Do they have leadership skills? Can they have difficult conversations? What happens when they fail? Are they resilient? Do they know how to set goals for themselves? Are they optimizing their health in the process of all the things that they’re doing as kids? Are they building in time for creativity and even creating some boredom so that they can be creative and not just be on a screen all day?
No, they’re not assessing any of that. They’re strictly looking at these test scores.
[9:39] Raising Luminaries Spark
This is exactly why we created the Raising Luminaries Spark, a free workbook that will help you as a parent, especially if you have that entrepreneurial spirit, to raise your child up in a way that is going to allow them to have wholesome success.
This tool is so powerful, and it’s directly in line with what we’re talking about so, if you haven’t already, go to luminaryleadershipco.com/spark to download it for free.
[10:56] There Are Other Options
So, screw a frickin’ Benchmark Report. They can shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.
How about we nurture the elements of our kids and we don’t call them a failure if they’re not on a direct path to college? There are so many other options than driving themselves into debt, to go to a school at 18 years of age when they don’t even know what the heck they want to do. And maybe the thing they want to do isn’t even available to them in that school.
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t knocking teachers. I have so many friends that are teachers, and they’re the ones that are salvaging the experience for the children. I’m talking about the school system, and it’s not just the public school system. This is happening in parochial schools, private schools, religious schools, etc. Yes, there are gems out there, but that’s not the norm.
If this spoke to you, if this lit a fire in you, if it gave you a different perspective, please share it. There are so many people that are on autopilot, where we just let things like this slide or we become conditioned and assume that this is just the standard of care for our kids. But it’s not. There are other options. And when we band together as entrepreneurial parents who are called to both of these worlds, we can elevate in business and change the lives of our families and then we can raise up our kids at the same time in a beautiful way. And if you need some help with that, don’t forget to download the Spark at https://luminaryleadershipco.com/spark/.
